Financial Assistance
At the Old Town Orono YMCA, we believe everyone should have access to our programs and services. Thanks to the generous donors in our community, our financial assistance program ensures that cost is not a barrier. Whether you’re interested in memberships, child care, or other programs, we’re here to support you and your family.
At the Y, we believe swimming can be a fun and essential part of a healthy lifestyle and that everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to be safe around water. Our swim lessons provide opportunities to learn basic self rescue skills, increase comfort with underwater exploration, build stroke technique, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. With more than 110 years of experience teaching millions of people to swim, the Y is America’s most trusted swim instructor. Y swim instructors are trained, caring leaders who are ready to help anyone – from infants to seniors – find their love of water.
Parent & Child Swim Lessons
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision. Our Infant and Toddler lessons begin by introducing infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment, then progress to water exploration which focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Preschool Swim Lessons
A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water. Your swim instructor will assign your child’s stage based on their swim skills, and children will advance through stages as skills improve, beginning with basic self-rescue skills preformed with assistance. Lessons progress to body position and control, forward movement and directional changes in the water and continued practice on how to exit safely in the event of falling into the water. Later stages will focus on water stamina and stroke introduction.
Youth Swim Lessons
Students learn personal water safety, achieve basic swimming competency, and progress to learn about the four competitive swimming strokes. Kids ages 6 to 12 can progress through six stages of classes as they learn to swim, work to refine strokes, and advance their water skills, beginning with water acclimation, movement and stamina, and progressing through stroke introduction and stoke mechanics.
Teen & Adult Swim Lessons
No matter your age, water safety is important, and it’s never too late to learn a new skill! Teens and Adults may choose from different levels of classes, beginning with water safety and swimming competency, to building and refining stroke techniques. Choose from group lessons or work one-on-one with an instructor with private swim lessons.
